Industry Context

Why Smart Agriculture demands a different engineering approach

Indian agriculture faces a unique set of challenges: erratic monsoons, water scarcity, rising input costs, and market price volatility. Technology can't solve all of these, but it can help farmers make better decisions — when to irrigate, when to spray, when to harvest — using data rather than guesswork.

NewTechSpot designs and deploys low-power sensor networks and analytics platforms built for agricultural environments: outdoor, rugged, battery-powered, and often in areas with limited or intermittent connectivity.

Industry Challenges

What makes Smart technology hard

Water Management

Over-irrigation wastes water and damages crops; under-irrigation reduces yield. Farmers rarely have objective data to calibrate irrigation timing.

Remote Monitoring

Large farms with no power or network infrastructure make continuous monitoring difficult. Manual scouting is labour-intensive and infrequent.

Post-harvest Losses

Cold chain breakdowns and lack of traceability result in significant post-harvest losses. Buyers increasingly demand provenance documentation.

Labour Costs

Agricultural labour costs are rising while availability is falling. Targeted automation of specific high-cost tasks delivers clear ROI.

Question 01

Does the system work in areas with no mobile network?

Yes. We use LoRaWAN (long-range, low-power radio) for sensor-to-gateway communication, which works at distances of 5–15km with no SIM card required. Gateways upload to cloud via Wi-Fi or 4G.
